Visa jumped 3.1 percent today and hit a fresh all-time high, with payment stocks leading the market as investors fled capital-intensive tech. Here's the distinction worth knowing: Visa doesn't lend money. It runs a toll road — every card swipe generates a fee, and none of the credit risk ever touches Visa's balance sheet. That's why V is up 9 percent in 2026 while American Express is down 9 percent in the same period. AmEx lends to cardholders; when the economic outlook gets murky, that credit exposure gets repriced. Visa's doesn't. The all-time high matters technically too — analysts hold price targets as high as 570 dollars, and a clean chart makes those targets easier to defend. Watch whether Nvidia stabilizes, because this rotation holds only as long as investors stay skeptical of capital-heavy growth.
