The company beat Q3 earnings expectations and raised full-year guidance, but the real story is Optum — UnitedHealth's health services and pharmacy arm — showing meaningful margin recovery. Here's what drives insurance stocks: it's not revenue, it's the medical loss ratio, which is simply what percentage of premium dollars actually gets paid out in claims. When that number is moving the wrong way, no amount of top-line growth saves you. Today's report showed it moving the right way. Morgan Stanley had already raised their target with a 40 percent upside call on the thesis that Medicare membership losses would stabilize. Today gave that call something to lean on. The next proof point is Q4 Medicare enrollment — that's where the thesis either firms up or falls apart.
