CAT dropped 3.3 percent today, and this is a valuation story playing out in real time. The stock trades at 29 times earnings — not because Caterpillar became a software company, but because Wall Street priced in a booming power systems business selling equipment to AI data centers. That's legitimate. The problem: management itself has warned those data center orders could slow after 2028, and 29 times earnings leaves zero margin for that kind of deceleration. When a cyclical industrial earns a growth-stock multiple, it has to keep delivering growth to hold it. Miss once, and the multiple compresses fast — that's what today's move is starting to price. Watch hyperscaler capital expenditure guidance next earnings season. CAT's multiple is more sensitive to that number than to anything happening in construction.
